FOOD CRISIS in America Before and Since Monsanto

The recent defeat of GMO labeling in Colorado & Oregon has certainly confirmed the current FOOD CRISIS in America and how it began.  Monsanto and a list of other “all-American” companies (that also had too much to lose to labeling) spent $17 in Colorado and over $20 million in Oregon to defeat GMO labeling.  They presented a masterful campaign in order to convince the voters that they did not want or need to know, or even have the right to know, what’s in their food.  Their misleading, dishonest, and incorrect messages were everywhere.  The campaign for labeling couldn’t possibly compete with the financial resources of the anti-labeling forces.



The food crisis in America has become critical since genetically engineered foods came on the scene, but it actually started long before Monsanto.  It began when we stopped thinking about or caring where our food came from, when our children had no clue about where it came from; when we no longer grew any of our own food, nor knew the people who did grow our food; when we didn’t care about or denied the suffering on factory farms; when we stopped preparing our own food, in favor of prepared, boxed food from “all-American” food- producing companies, all for convenience. 


It began when we started trusting companies that rely on profit, profit not just on crops for our food, but also on chemicals to spray on those crops & then on drugs to treat us, in good part, for conditions caused by our food.   I agree with EatLocalGrown:  “Monsanto exists because of our neglect.”  How we became so disconnected from such an important part of our very being, & quality of our lives, is hard to understand.”  It began when we no longer had time to attend to this part of our being.  “It’s time to reconnect!” This is a good time to think about why we have this food crisis, & what it means to our health, & that of future generatiions.


I thought this would also be a good time to review, for all of us in these two states, as well as the rest of America, how to avoid GMOs and toxins in our food:

- Above all, buy organic  whenever possible.  The USDA National organic program prohibits GMO crops from being used in certified organic crops for food & animal feed.  Most genetically engineered crops in this country are altered in order to survive massive doses of Roundup (and soon, 2,4-D). 

– Look for foods labeled non-GMO or GMO-free

– Know the top GMO crops & GMO ingredients that are in most processed and non-organic food:

   — Corn, including high fructose corn syrup (an ingredient in a huge number of products, often where we least expect it) & glucose/fructose, & all non-organic foods that contain corn (such as tortillas, chips, cereal, etc.)

   — Cottonseed Oil – often in vegetable oil & margarine 

   — Soybeans – soy lecithin & soy additives 

   — Sugar Beets – may be listed as just “sugar” 

   — Canola, or rapeseed

nonGMO cookbook- Shop LOCAL - Most GMO food is produced on large farms by huge corporate companies. Go  to local farmer’ markets & ask them about their growing. 

– Make your food from scratch – YOU control every ingredient, unlike the prepared foods, lining the grocery store shelves, that are controlled by the big biotech & agri-businesses. 

– GROW YOUR OWN, as much as possible.  This can also be tricky, as Monsanto and the other biotech companies have purchased most of the seed companies, even organic & heirloom seeds.  Go here for more information about seed companies:

- Be aware of the DIRTY DOZEN for the current year, the fruits & vegetables that are most likely to have more pesticide use & residue.  If you can only buy certain produce as organics, make sure it’s these items:
